If you want to know why polls don’t hand out trophies, the 2019 2A girls’ race is the entire argument in one number: one. One point separated the state champion from the runner-up — and the poll had them in the wrong order.

Girls’ poll, October 4th: Hooker, Watonga, Cherokee, Ryan, Waurika. State: Watonga 52, Hooker 53. The poll’s No. 2 edged the poll’s No. 1 by a single point. Somewhere a tiebreaker went unneeded and a whole town celebrated by the slimmest margin the sport allows.

Boys’ poll, October 4th: Mooreland, Hooker, Lomega, Carnegie, Merritt. State: Mooreland 76, Rejoice Christian 81. The champion was the poll’s No. 1 — but the runner-up was the poll’s No. 9, crashing a podium nobody reserved for them.

Beaver’s Zoee Weaver won the girls’ individual title; Mooreland’s Collen McLain won the boys’ crown — a champion from the champion team, the way it’s supposed to work.

One point. That’s the margin. Polls don’t run the race — Watonga does.
