Oklahoma 2A Cross Country Final Rankings 2022: Hooker Again, and Riley Randall’s 45-Second Statement

The final 2022 2A poll was less a prediction than a weather report: Hooker No. 1 on both sides, and Hooker won both sides — boys 58, girls 41. The Hooker girls’ 41 points came against a Velma-Alma runner-up at 154. One hundred and thirteen points of daylight. That’s not a championship, that’s a different area code.
Girls’ poll, posted October 11th: Hooker, Velma-Alma, Southwest Covenant, Laverne, Riverside. State: Hooker 41, champions, defending the title with a dominating effort. The poll didn’t predict this; it transcribed it. When the gap is 113 points, the rankings are just a mirror held up to the inevitable.
Boys’ poll, posted October 6th: Hooker, Wright City, Boise City, Warner, Timberlake. State: Hooker 58, champions. Same mirror, same inevitable. The small-school dynasty doesn’t rebuild; it reloads.
But the individual races — that’s where 2A 2022 gets its spice. The boys’ title went to Meeker senior Riley Randall in 15:45.07, nearly 45 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Forty-five seconds. In a state championship race. Meeker was No. 7 in the team poll. The seventh-ranked team produced a kid who won by almost a minute, which tells you everything about the difference between ranking teams and racing people.
The girls’ crown went to Laverne junior Kamryn Baggs in 11:52.09 — Laverne was No. 4 in the team poll. So both 2A individual champions came from outside the top three teams, while both team titles went to the poll’s No. 1. The poll and the stopwatch agreed on the programs and disagreed on the people. That’s not a contradiction; that’s cross country.
2022 2A: Hooker’s house, everybody else just runs in it — and two individual champions who proved the fastest kid in the class doesn’t need the best team in the class. The poll was right about the trophies. The races were right about the runners.
