Piedmont's boys scored 28 at the 2018 5A state meet — dominance the poll actually predicted for once.

The 2018 5A final polls were that rarest of things: mostly right. Bishop Kelley’s girls were supposed to win, and did. Piedmont’s boys were supposed to win, and did — by a margin that made the poll look prophetic instead of merely competent.

Girls’ poll, October 20th: Bishop Kelley, Piedmont, Guthrie, Coweta, Carl Albert. State: Bishop Kelley 33, Guthrie 90. The champion was the poll’s No. 1; the runner-up was the poll’s No. 3. Kelley won by 57 points — the poll predicted the winner, not the avalanche.

Boys’ poll, October 10th: Piedmont, Santa Fe South, Guymon, Bishop Kelley, NW Classen. State: Piedmont 28, Guymon 69. Twenty-eight points. The poll’s No. 1 delivered the most dominant team score in the 2018 archive, and the 41-point gap to second place is the kind of number that ends arguments.

The individual titles went to Bishop Kelley’s Ella Eureste on the girls’ side and Santa Fe South’s Christian Arenivar on the boys’ side.

Piedmont’s boys put up 28 — the poll called the winner, but nobody’s ballot predicts a 41-point coronation.
