The Week 4 edition of the 5A girls poll is out, and the headline hasn’t changed all season: everyone else in the classification is running for second behind Bishop Kelley.

The Comets sit No. 1 in the team rankings, followed by Sapulpa at No. 2 and Guthrie at No. 3. Southeast and Coweta round out the top five, with Duncan, Edison Prep, Tahlequah, Durant and Bishop McGuinness completing the top ten. The rest of the ranked 25 — Collinsville, Newcastle, Blanchard, Carl Albert, Lawton Mac, Classen SAS, Grove, Noble, Claremore, Guymon, Altus, Woodward, Glenpool and Elgin — deserve their mention, but let’s not pretend this is a wide-open race.

The individual board tells the same story, only louder. Rubie Gross of Bishop Kelley is No. 1 at 17:58, run at the Lincoln MOC back on September 12th. Teammate Annabelle Gentry is No. 2 at 18:50. Kherington Smith — Kelley again — is No. 4 at 19:24, and Selma Grandon makes it four Comets in the top seven at 19:54. When one program holds the No. 1 team spot and four of the top seven individuals, the poll isn’t ranking a competition. It’s documenting a coronation.

Credit where it’s due: Peyton Williams of Duncan is the only non-Kelley runner in the top four, sitting No. 3 at 19:23, and Avery Saeger of Durant holds No. 5 at 19:34 from Pre-State. Allena Cotanny of Lawton Mac (No. 8, 19:58), Piper Mitchell of Carl Albert (No. 9, 20:02) and Clara Winter of Coweta (No. 10, 20:08) round out a top ten with genuine depth — even if the very top of it is painted Kelley blue.

Now the part where this blog earns its reputation. Read the individual rankings closely and answer one question: where is No. 6? The list jumps straight from Saeger at No. 5 to Grandon at No. 7. Somewhere between Durant and the keyboard, the sixth-ranked girl in 5A simply vanished. Terry Stupp’s name is on the update line, and compiling these polls by hand every week is a thankless job — but a skipped number in a top-50 list makes you wonder what else didn’t survive the spreadsheet.

It gets better. Valerie Porras of Edison Prep ran 18:38 at BTW on September 24th — faster than the No. 2-ranked runner’s season best of 18:50. Porras has no number next to her name at all; she just floats in the table between first and second like a ghost. Either she’s the fastest unranked girl in 5A or somebody’s spreadsheet has a row it forgot to number. If times are the currency of this sport, 18:38 spends.

And since we’re proofreading: the team list spells Woodward as “Woodwaard.” Two Ws, zero proofread. (Woodward, you’re No. 22. The extra W is silent. Probably.)

Bottom line: Bishop Kelley is the story, the poll’s arithmetic is the subplot, and October’s championship season can’t get here fast enough. If the rankings crew finds No. 6 before state, the Red Dirt Runner will be first in line to congratulate her — right after we learn her name.
