Oklahoma 6A Cross Country Final Rankings 2018: Deer Creek's Boys Crashed the Poll's Party

Deer Creek's boys were fourth in the final 2018 6A poll — and first at the state meet by 28 points.

The October 1st, 2018 6A polls had Owasso sitting on top of both sides like they owned the place. The state meet evicted them from one side and nearly evicted them from the other. Deer Creek’s teams heard their poll positions and treated them as insults.

Girls’ poll, October 1st: Owasso, Deer Creek, Jenks, Norman, Edmond Santa Fe. State: Deer Creek Edmond 87, Owasso 92. Five points. The poll’s No. 2 nipped the poll’s No. 1 in the closest big-class finish of the year — close enough that the pollsters can claim they basically had it.

Boys’ poll, October 1st: Owasso, Edmond Memorial, Mustang, Deer Creek, Norman. State: Deer Creek Edmond 66, Owasso 94. The poll’s No. 4 won by 28 points. That’s not a miss, that’s a different sport — the ballot said fourth, the course said first, and the course doesn’t do recounts.

Norman’s Sophia Maag won the girls’ individual title; Mustang’s Gabe Simonsen won the boys’ crown — the first leg of what would become three straight 6A titles (2018–2020).

2018 6A proved the poll is a suggestion, not a sentence — Deer Creek’s boys heard ‘fourth’ and answered ‘first.’
